Research topics - Antagonistic driver genes in prostate cancer in genomic models

In a review published in Trends in Cancer, the group displayed findings on antagonistic driver genes in prostate cancer in a more general context, discussing genomic patterns and their underlying biology across various tumor types. While co-occurring driver genes typically activate different but cooperating oncogenic pathways in promoting tumor development, mutually exclusive driver genes activate pathways that are divergent or incompatible with tumorigenesis.

The group identified two distinct biological categories of incompatibility among mutually exclusive driver genes, depending on whether they activate the same or different tumorigenic pathways. Finally, possible therapeutic strategies based on mutations in mutually exclusive driver genes were discussed.
