The IOR, affiliated with the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), is located in a brand-new high-tech research building that hosts more than 20 different research groups, with state-of-the-art labs and facilities. Together with the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), the IOR is member of Bios+, a recently established non-profit association aiming to promote, support and coordinate scientific research and teaching activities of its members (www.biosplus.ch). IOR offers a multicultural environment and daily occasions of interaction with world leaders in the fields of cancer, basic immunology, and cancer immunology. The Baggiolini lab offers cutting-edge stem cell technologies in an international, stimulating, dynamic, and friendly atmosphere.
Project background
Why are some cells “competent” to form cancer while others are not?
Our group aims at understanding the mechanisms that regulate oncogenic competence, melanoma initiation, and progression. We study how developmental programs regulate “competence” cell-intrinsically and how those programs are controlled depending on the microenvironment, including sites of distant metastases, like the brain. The lab addresses those questions using an integrative approach based on mouse models and human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived organoids and assembloids.
We can offer projects on the following topics:
- Cancer neuroscience
- Melanoma metastasis, cellular adaption, and niche remodeling
- Perineural invasion
- Developmental chromatin programs regulating cellular maturation and drug resistance
Job description
We seek highly motivated candidates interested in stem cells and cancer research.
We offer fully funded positions for 2 Postdoctoral fellows and 1 PhD Student. Postdoctoral fellows are expected to apply for fellowships to support their research and boost their visibility.
Salary will follow the IOR salary scale, which is in line with the rest of Switzerland and the SNF directives.
Your profile – Postdoctoral fellow
The ideal candidate is a pro-active, flexible, independent, and team-oriented scientist. She/he should be a problem solver with great organizational skills. Candidates with experience in stem cell biology, molecular genetics, chromatin biology and mouse models are particularly encouraged to apply.
Your profile – PhD Student
Candidates should have a Master degree related to life sciences with practical laboratory experience (cell biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, medicine, etc.), and be fluent in English.
