At the annual Dies academicus of the University of Zurich (UZH), held online of April 25, Prof. Giorgio Noseda, Honorary President of the IRB Foundation and Vice President of the IOR Foundation, has been appointed 'honorary senator' of UZH in recognition of its relentless commitment to medical research, contributing in particular to the development of cancer research in Switzerland.
The University of Zurich awards the title of honorary senator to researchers or professors of the various Faculties in recognition of their service to the academic community and the University. In addition to his medical practice, Professor Noseda was instrumental in founding several organisations that are of great importance for cancer research in Switzerland. He is known, among other things, for the creation of the Swiss Cancer Research Foundation, which finances research projects with at least CHF 20 million per year, of Oncosuisse (umbrella organization of all Swiss cancer organizations), and of the National Institute for Cancer Epidemiology and Registration (NICER). Prof. Noseda is also known for his important contribution to the creation of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) in Bellinzona.
In December 2019, the University of Zurich announced the institution of the "Giorgio Noseda Chair for Cancer Epidemiology and Treatment" from 2020, thanks to a donation from the "Swiss Cancer League House" Foundation. This chair is to be used for transversal research into risk factors, oncological diseases at the population level, early diagnosis and patient care.
