Role Mission
The successful candidate will work as part of a team that is dedicated to understanding how molecular alterations promote tumorigenesis, and how gathered insights can be exploited to develop better therapies. The position offers excellent scientific opportunities in a highly stimulating, interdisciplinary environment involving close interactions between medical and basic scientists.
More specifically, the candidate will have the opportunity to functionally investigate and exploit recent discoveries emerging from a prostate cancer transcriptome atlas (www.prostatecanceratlas.org) using state-of-the-art technologies in ex vivo organoid cultures, patient-derived xenograft models in vivo, and clinical tissue samples (e.g., PMID: 34857732). Projects include the follow-up of a thus far unrecognized protein isoform of an established tumor suppressor protein implicated in mitochondrial biology as well as putative drug targets aimed at preventing disease progression.

Your profile
Essentials:

  • Strong interest/background in cancer biology metabolism, and mitochondria
  • At least one first-author publication for postdocs and a co-authorship for Ph.D. student applicants
  • Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. already obtained or soon-to-be for postdoc applicants
  • Strategic thinking, self-initiative, and a strong sense of accountability with an ability and willingness to challenge, to be challenged, and to learn.

Desirable:

  • Interest/background in biochemistry and related assays (e.g., proximity assays, BioID, metabolomic profiling) and confocal microscopy

Our commitment
The position is located at the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR) in Southern Switzerland. The initial appointment with competitive salaries is for at least 1 year - 100%. A longer-term commitment over 4 years and more can be expected.

The IOR is a rapidly evolving, leading center for basic and translational cancer research located in a brand-new research building with state-of-the-art facilities. It hosts together with the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) about 20 complementary research groups and offers daily occasions of interaction with leaders in the fields of cancer, basic immunology, and cancer immunology.

The IOR and IRB are affiliated with the local University in Lugano (Università della Svizzera italiana, USI) and run a competitive Ph.D. program with the biomedical faculty at USI which includes an International Ph.D. Lecture Series with worldwide recognized opinion leaders and a wide range of training opportunities and courses.

Application
We are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive digital application in English in a single PDF-File. The application will include a curriculum vitae (with training, working experience, and publications), two reference letters, and a statement of research interest (maximum one page).
Please submit your application to: humanresources@ior.usi.ch
