Research topics - Epigenetic regulators and the potential of epigenetic therapies

Epigenetic mechanisms contribute to cancer evolution and progression, determining the phenotypic transitions and favoring metastasis and the emergence of treatment resistance. We study the contribution of the epigenetic processes to cancers like prostate and liver cancer. We also test novel epigenetic drugs to counteract cancer cell plasticity and therapy resistance by blocking key epigenetic and transcriptional regulators. Integrating multiple approaches and in vitro/in vivo experimental models gives relevant insights into identifying critical factors and novel therapeutic agents. Along this line, we are currently investigating novel clinical-stage inhibitors of epigenetic effectors in preclinical prostate and liver cancer models, focusing on their ability to reprogram the cancer cell transcriptome, increase therapeutic efficacy, and reduce treatment failures.
